Hands-On, Shoreside Salmon Fishing vs. Boat Fishing

Shore vs. Boat Fishing

When we started Chum Fun Salmon Charters, we wanted to provide our guests with the best experience salmon fishing in Juneau possible. So we made a decision to offer shoreside salmon fishing instead of boat charters. Why? Fishing from the docks is something we locals do every day, and it is far more exciting than fishing from the sea. Learn more!

You Land the Fish

Boat charters use a fishing technique called salmon trolling. Salmon trolling involves dropping weights called “downriggers” into the water to plunge the lure to a particular depth. The rod is then anchored along the side of the drifting boat, and it sits there until a fish comes on the line to be reeled in.

With shoreside salmon fishing, you hold the rod and cast it to lure the fish in yourself. Once the fish bites, you have total control over your rod to reel in your wild, Alaska salmon!

No More Waiting

Boat charters often consist of sitting around, waiting for a fish to bite instead of actively being involved in the process, which shoreside fishing allows.

More Time Downtown

Getting set up and going on a boat charter takes significantly more time than shoreside salmon fishing, which allows you to spend more time enjoying the sights and sounds of Juneau!

No More Seasickness

Shoreside salmon fishing is not only more exciting than boat charters, is a great alternative for individuals who struggle with seasickness!

If you would like to experience the fun of hands-on, shoreside salmon fishing in Juneau, call us to book a reservation today! At Chum Fun Salmon Charters, we offer an all-inclusive, family-friendly, shoreside fishing experience. Our charter includes an educational tour of a local hatchery as well as all of the expert gear and training you need to land a fish!

When you look at the reviews for this place all you see is 5 stars from everyone. No 3’s or 4’s but all 5’s. Well let me tell ya..all those people are not wrong !! This place is AWESOME !! Paul and Michell are so kind and super attentive to all your fishing needs. Paul picked us up at the cruise ship dock and after a short drive to the “OFFICE” to get our fishing license and seeing a bear, some eagles and a bunch of seals, we were off to fish. We caught some awesome salmon. Paul made sure everyone was well equipped and helped teach those who did not know how to cast. When our time was up fishing, Paul cleaned our fish and took them to the processor to be shipped home for us. He then took us to a salmon hatchery and gave us a tour of how the salmon spawn. Very interesting !! Needless to say..you will not be disappointed with this fishing charter. We will defiantly go again when we come back to Alaska. Thanks for a great outing !! Jim ..Nicky..and “SLIPPERS” aka Katie !!

Do you pick us up at the ship when we dock and take us back to the ship?
    Do you feed lunch?

      Hi Tim!

We pick up and drop off at the base of the Mt. Roberts Tram. Walking distance from the cruise ships.
We do not offer lunch as we are only a 3.5hour excursion. We do offer bottled water and a granola bar,
but do feel free to bring yourself a lunch! Please let be know if you have anymore questions.

It’s really fun that you mentioned how salmon fishing charter services provide aficionados with all the equipment necessary to do salmon trolling by dropping downriggers into the water to lure salmon at a particular depth. This is just the sort of Lake Tahoe adventure that my grandpa would love to enjoy with his veteran pals during his wedding anniversary celebration. He’d sure be more than glad if I surprise him and his pals with two salmon charters for a fishing competition. The team who would catch the most salmon getting a customized engraved golden trophy for their achievement!
